Description: View of the Central Court at the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition (AYPE) in Seattle. This fair took place June- October, 1909 on the site of the present-day University of Washington campus. It featured the commerce and culture of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska/Yukon, and the Pacific Rim regions, and was meant to be both edifying and entertaining. The United States Government Building is at center, behind the Cascades waterfall and the Alaska Monument. The domed U. S. Building is surrounded (from left to right) by the European, Alaska, Hawaii/Philippines, and Oriental Buildings. When the fair ended, very few of the magnificent exhibition buildings were retained for use by the University. Description: Ezra Meeker, Puyallup founder and Oregon Trail advocate, camping with his covered wagon and ox team in front of his mansion. Meeker crossed the Old Oregon Trail twice in the 1900's, marking the trail with monuments commemorating its original pioneers. This photo was taken upon the eve of his first trip. The Meeker Mansion is a 17-room house built in 1890 upon the insistence of Ezra Meeker's wife, Eliza Jane. She had lived with Meeker and raised their family in a small cabin for 26 years, and was ripe for a change. Ezra was not particularly fond of the house, and sold it immediately upon his wife's death in 1909. It is now a museum, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Description: The Smith Tower was built by firearms and typewriter magnate Lyman Cornelius Smith. He planned to build a 14-story structure, but was convinced by his son that a skyscraper would be better for business. Construction began in 1910, and Opening Day was July 3, 1914. At 522 feet from curb to top finial, the tower was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi until 1931, and the tallest on the West Coast until the Space Needle came along in 1962. In this photo, the building appears to be in its final stages of construction.

Meeker and his wife Eliza Jane built this cabin in 1862, 15 years before he platted the town, and they lived in it for 26 years. Eliza Jane planted the ivy vine in 1864. Upon her urging and with a fortune amassed through the hop industry, Ezra Meeker built and moved his family into the Meeker Mansion in 1890. He gifted his former homestead to the city of Puyallup. In recognition, a pergola was built in what is now Pioneer Park to support the ivy vine still marking the cabin site.

Description: In Washington, black bears live in a diverse array of forested habitats, from coastal rainforests to the dry woodlands of the Cascades’ eastern slopes. In general, black bears are strongly associated with forest cover, but they do occasionally use relatively open country, such as clearcuts and the fringes of other open habitat. Black bears can take up residence in small dens, some scarcely bigger than a garbage can. Den sites include tree cavities, hollow logs, small caves, and areas beneath large roots, stumps, logs, and rural buildings. They’ll occasionally excavate a den in the side of a hill near shrubs or other cover.

Front caption: The Totem Pole
Back caption: The Totem Pole was carved from a cedar tree by natives upon Tongass Island, Alaska, where it stood for more than a century. It was presented to the City in 1899. It is an interesting feature in Pioneer Place.
Date: c. 1910
Publisher: Seattle, U.S.A.- Robert A. Reid, Publisher- 488 Arcade.
Notes: The Pacific Northwest Photographic Series
Description: A totem pole stands as the central attraction in Pioneer Square amidst the Seattle Hotel, Pioneer Square Pergola, and the Olympia Beer building. This totem pole was essentially stolen by a Seattle Post-Intelligencer sponsored "Good Will Committee" tour of Alaska in 1899. While visiting the Tlingit village of Fort Tongass, a third mate from the steamship "City of Seattle" chopped down the pole and brought it back with him to Seattle. Although all involved were eventually cleared of charges of thievery, the Seattle P.I. paid a minimal fee for damages to the Tlingit Tribe. The Pole was carved around 1799 by the Raven Clan in honor of a woman named "Chief-of-all-Women". A raven- the symbol of that which knows everything and is everywhere at the same time- stood at the top of the pole. In 1938, an arson fire damaged the pole, and it was replaced in 1940 with a replica.

Description: On February 13, 1878, the town was platted as Spokane Falls, and in Nov. 29, 1881, was incorporated under the same name. When the town was reincorporated in 1890 the city council altered the name to its present form. This name appears to be from the Indian tribal designation, Spehkunne, meaning Children of the Sun or Sun People. It evidently comes from Indians who formerly lived in a village at the foot of Spokane Falls. When they fished at the falls, they stood in a rainbow or halo of light formed by sunlight striking a cloud of mist. An alternate source of the name is from Illum Spokane, an elderly chief of Middle Spokans, who once lived near the falls.
