Aerial view of Tanglewood Island. Tanglewood Island lies northeast of Fox Island in Hale Passage in northwest Pierce County. The Ta-ha-do-Wa Camp for Boys was located here and its circular pavilion, lighthouse and dock are clearly visible. Ta-ha-do-Wa, organized in 1945, was a private camp for boys ages 9-16. The name stood for "Welcome Back to Pleasant Surroundings"; the camp was 14 miles from Tacoma by car or three miles by boat. The pavilion was the showpiece of the camp and it contained a dining area, play and meeting rooms, and showers. A salt water pool was adjacent to the pavilion and the temperature was kept at a steady 65 degrees. (TNT 6-3-56, A-3) TPL-9190
